Getting DOT Physicals at a Full Service Emergency Room

Emergency Room Carrollton, TX

Many emergency rooms offer the Department of Transportation physicals, also known as DOT physicals, to drivers who want to obtain or retain a commercial driver’s license. Operating a semi-truck, bus, or other types of large motor vehicles comes with great responsibility. Avoiding accidents or injuries to other drivers is usually paramount to most operators of these large vehicles, as such wrecks are usually deadly. If you are ready for a DOT physical, it may be helpful to know how to prepare and what to expect during the course of the exam.

About DOT physical exams

Anyone who wants to qualify for a commercial driver’s license will likely have to undergo a DOT physical. These medical exams are designed to determine the overall health of applicants and whether there are any physical limitations that may prevent them from safely operating a large commercial vehicle. The physical usually includes a variety of tests that gauge drivers’ ability to perform certain tasks:

  • Reading road signs correctly
  • Listening for potential danger on the road or in the vehicle
  • Remaining mentally alert on long drives or shifts

While the exact process of the exam can vary from state to state, it typically involves an in-depth examination of the physical and mental state of individuals who drive or want to drive commercial vehicles.

Preparing for the physical

Drivers who require a DOT physical may be able to schedule one at an emergency room or take one on a walk-in basis. A great deal of preparation is usually not required; however, individuals may want to bring along a list of current medications, names of doctors seen regularly, and other details that may be pertinent to the exam. A medical history of any surgeries or chronic health issues can also be helpful to the attending physician.

Exam procedures

During the exam, patients may undergo a variety of tests that gauge the health of the body’s major systems, such as vision, hearing, and basic cognition. Weight, height, blood pressure, and pulse rates will likely be noted and recorded. The doctor may also ask about family medical history at this point as well. Problems such as type two diabetes, certain cancers, and some mental illnesses can be hereditary. Individuals undergoing the DOT exam should answer these questions as honestly as possible. Blood and urine samples may also be collected at this stage of the exam.

After the exam

Once the physical is completed, the immediate care physician will usually provide the results to both the patient and the Department of Transportation. Any individuals who do not pass the exam may be informed that more medical tests are necessary and what conditions have disqualified them. Drivers who take daily prescription medication may require written statements from the dispensing physician that the drugs will not interfere with the safe operation of a large commercial motor vehicle before obtaining a license.

Conclusion

Knowing what to expect during an emergency room DOT physical can help applicants feel more confident about the process from start to finish. Health and safety often go hand in hand for drivers of commercial vehicles and verifying physical and mental wellness can reduce the risk of accidents and loss of lives.
